Dollar coins will never catch on unless the vending machines begin actually taking them - everytime I have tried to use one in a machine it kicks it back out at me. Anyone who has ever tried to ram a dollar bill in one of those machines knows that if it would take the coin the paper dollars would become obsolete immediately

Aside from the problem of vending machines not taking them I believe the biggest complaint is that they are a pain to carry around. I normally carry about forty dollars in cash on any given day.Of that money I may have five to ten ones.I would never carry five to ten dollar coins in my pocket. I don't like carrying change period. If the mint thinks I'm going to go ga-ga over John Adams picture on it they're nuts. It didn't work with Susan Anthony and it didn't work with Sakajacallit. They just don't get it.

We just returned from a trip to BC Canada and experienced life and commerce without dollar bills. Canada has $1 and $2 coins - and no paper bills in those denominations. The coins work in vending machines and getting and/or making change is no problem. My vote would be to eliminate the paper dollar at once. While we're at it, we might copy their health system as well. We don't have to reinvent all the wheels.
